branchandroot: Tsuzuki squeeing (Tsuzuki squee)
So, many long years ago (in fan-years, which is kind of like dog years only possibly moreso) there were two seasons worth of anime made of Kuroshitsuji. The first one wasn't bad, though involved a little more "wow this studio does a whole lot of shota, don't they" then I was one hundred percent down with. The second one ran past the manga, though, and took a full speed jump over the shark into "wtf was that" land. So I wrote it off and went back to the manga alone, even if it's a monthly, which is a little like torture.

But recently, I saw there'd been more anime made, going back to the original departure point and picking up from the manga plot again. A little cautiously, I watched it. And then I sparkled a lot, because it was really, really good. High quality, beautifully voiced, hit all the emotional beats of the story dead on. I hoped that this trend would continue, and possessed my soul of patience (or at least, distracted myself with other shows).

And then I thought, "self, this is re-watch quality; we should download it". And, upon browsing our Best Site (nyaa.si), imagine my glee when I found that the two arcs after that season had also been made! And (now we're getting to the good part) that one of them was the Atlantic cruise arc! I promptly pulled down everything and waited for a weekend to watch this movie-length arc.

*inhales deeply*

THEY DID IT, THEY ANIMATED LIZZY'S SCENE! OH MY GOD, IT'S THE BEST THING IN THE HISTORY OF EVER, THEY ACTUALLY DID IT RIGHT, AAAAAAAA, IT'S LIZZY'S SCENE!

(Also, I was absolutely right, this is the moment Sebastien calls Lizzy "Lady" in English, and you will pry this OT3 out of my cold, dead hands.)

In conclusion: the latest Kuroshitsuji anime is highly recommended for watching.

So, I've just caught up with Kuroshitsuji, which meant that of course I had to go back and re-read Lizzy kicking zombie ass with swords, because that is the best scene in the entire manga, bar none. Elizabeth + swords = <3 4evar. Lizzy rocks the world so hard.

This, however, led, as such things do, to re-reading more arcs, and now I also need to squeal a bit over Ciel and Sebastian. Because every arc makes it clear that they are truly two of a kind, ruthless and manipulative, and basically very bad people. Ciel is seriously broken, and Sebastian seriously doesn't care, he just loves Ciel's response. Which is essentially: kill them all, burn the bodies, and sow the ground with salt. And perhaps uranium for good measure. I love that they are not good people, I love how viciously Ciel uses Sebastian, and how enchanted Sebastian is with Ciel's cold-bloodedness, I love how they spend so much time sniping sarcastically at each other and then share one of those smiles. The smile that says they will play the entire world like their personal violin, and they love doing it.

And yet.

And yet, there are still those moments of mercy woven through Ciel's manipulation and violence. Half the time, they're part and parcel of the manipulation and violence; they serve Ciel's own ends. But it's also genuine. That's the part that makes Ciel such a consistently interesting character. In this, Sebastian is the stand-in for the reader, fascinated by the contradictions of humanity.

That said, though, Lizzy is still the very best of all.

Just caught up with Kuroshitsuji, and I have only this to say:

YES, YES, YES, GO, GO, OMG, YES!!!!!

In slightly more detail, with only somewhat incoherent spoilers: )

*pauses to catch her breath* The last issue made my fucking MONTH. *grinning all over her face*

I finally got around to finishing up my watching of the Kuroshitsuji anime.

Eh. )

So, in general, I thought the anime was fun in places and not dreadful, but I definitely won't be re-watching it.

Want another manga issue now, please.

Having cheerfully spoiled myself for the anime ending of Kuroshitsuji, I’m afraid I will probably be dissatisfied with it.

Spoilers ensue )

So if those things have been altered in the anime Ciel, I don't think I'll find him nearly as fascinating. And if they haven't been altered, then the ending won't fit at all, which is always distressing.
