PoT: Mirror Writing: Twist

Fic post from my archive.
Ryouma encounters someone who jars his view of what tennis is, and has a few revelations in the aftermath, some less comfortable than others.
Momo remembered going from being a bit worried about Akutsu's dismissive contempt to being a little alarmed at his absolute, devouring, manic focus on Ryouma, once the game heated up. At no point had Momo really been surprised, though. Even then, he'd taken it pretty much for granted that Echizen could hold any fire barehanded, on the court.

Is there, by any chance, going to be a fic where we get to see Ryouma working through whatever thought he had that wouldn't let him go home, where Nanjirou is? [hope, hope]

Date: 2004-08-14 09:29 pm (UTC)I did enjoy your view of Fuji being one of the "crazies" and Ryomas fears for what "could have been" but... I think I need more variation between Matsueda and Akutsu.

Date: 2004-08-14 10:32 pm (UTC)Then, too, Akutsu does get fired up about his match with Ryouma, and more so after he sees Ryouma as a viable challenge than when he sees him, primarily, as something slightly amusing to crush. I've always considered that enough to put him in the crazy category. Ryouma smiles for Akutsu.
Crazies, Ryouma can handle. It's someone who's genuinely disinterested that I think would throw him for a loop, and I don't think he's come up against anyone like that who was anything other than a clown. He has no frame of reference for someone who genuinely doesn't care, even when offered the chance for a real fight, a real challenge. Akutsu got way too into their match to have been one of those.

<--- unable to explain it better, sorry....

Date: 2004-08-15 05:58 pm (UTC)Eehee, yes, come to the dark side! I'm quite fond of not-an-idiot!Momo; he strikes me as one of the most caring characters. I try to do justice to the hints we get, especially in the manga, that he really does have a sharp mind to go with the goofy grin and testosterone overcharge...
This branch is going slower than most, though. *sighs*

Date: 2004-08-15 07:41 am (UTC)Still, I agree with your take on Jin. In the anime it is definitely shown that Jin *is* attracked to tennis, but he's just one of those rebellious teenagers who needs a good kick in the ass! It's not that he doesn't care about tennis---I mean, look at how he 'chases' after Ryoma when Ryoma's playing for shit after losing to Sanada that first 'unofficial' match of theirs. And then when Keven shows up, you see it again... how he almost tries to "defend" his team? {grins{
Anyway, speaking of kitty kats in laps, *my* cat has decided that after being gone for nine days it's time I got off the computer and started giving him more loving, so if you'll excuse me...
Look froward to reading more soon!

Date: 2004-08-15 06:04 pm (UTC)I have a peculiar soft spot for Jin, actually. He seems to have gotten such a raw deal out of life. It's too bad he didn't wind up at Seigaku, himself, because I think Tezuka just might have straightened him out.

Date: 2004-08-16 03:49 am (UTC)Having watched the episode tonight where Jin "helps" Ryoma out of his funk after having lost so horrendously to Sanada, I have to definitely agree with you--Jin has a bad rep. but it's one he's worked long and hard at building.
With this topic fresh in mind, I was talking about it to Marika, and... it's just plain and easy to see that the kid really does like tennis; he's just too stubborn... and I think that's part of the reason his coach *does* push him so much, because he *can* see how much Jin cares about tennis. Probably more than anything else... he actually gives a flying fig tree about tennis.
But... Well, you look at him, and you see where he's coming from, at least a little bit. There's no father figure what-so-ever ever mentioned. Doing the math lets you know his mom was still in her teens when he was born (wasn't she only 30? if he's 14...) You know his childhood couldn't have been easy, and you see in the flashbacks how angry he was, going from one place to another looking for a fight, looking for a challenge... looking for something or someone he could look up to, something that was better than himself...
And, well, I think it's a pretty safe bet to say that Takashi was probably easily Jin's first (maybe only?) friend. At least until Junior High School, 'cause somehow, I get the impression Sengoku wouldn't mind being 'friends', and Dan definitely has a torch still burning for the psycho. ^___^
I don't know if Tezuka would be able to do for him what Ryoma did, though...

Date: 2004-08-16 05:46 am (UTC)First of all, you do great Rikkai D1 fics, and Rikkaidai fics in general. Good job, *loves your Rikkai*.
I totally didn't expect the TezukaOishi though, ^^;; sorry. But it was fine.
I was wondering if you'll ever go back to writing fics for FMA. I first found out about you from your FMA fics because I loved the dynamics that you managed to express with Roy Ed and Hughes. I hope that you'd write more for that fandom int he future. ^_^
With that said, I really enjoy your writing. ^^b

Date: 2004-08-16 05:59 pm (UTC)I will be back to FMA at some point. Not sure when, but at some point. Possibly after I figure out exactly how many characters I want to keep alive, and how to do it. ^_^
