Twist

Ryouma encounters someone who jars his view of what tennis is, and has a few revelations in the aftermath, some less comfortable than others. Drama With Almost Romance, I-4

Momo remembered going from being a bit worried about Akutsu's dismissive contempt to being a little alarmed at his absolute, devouring, manic focus on Ryouma, once the game heated up. At no point had Momo really been surprised, though. Even then, he'd taken it pretty much for granted that Echizen could hold any fire barehanded, on the court.

I think we have a different interpretation of Akutsu. See, I've never believed he was entirely truthful about not liking tennis. He's just too ornery to a) admit it or b) come back to it while there's still anyone waiting for him to do so. He has such a phenomenal knee-jerk anti-constraint thing going. (Banji, you silly old man, quit trying to convince him and he'll come around! It's like getting a cat to come sit in your lap...) It's made much less of in the manga, of course, but the anime really shows him sneaking back onto the court every time he can manufacture a rationalization to do so.

Then, too, Akutsu does get fired up about his match with Ryouma, and more so after he sees Ryouma as a viable challenge than when he sees him, primarily, as something slightly amusing to crush. I've always considered that enough to put him in the crazy category. Ryouma smiles for Akutsu.

Crazies, Ryouma can handle. It's someone who's genuinely disinterested that I think would throw him for a loop, and I don't think he's come up against anyone like that who was anything other than a clown. He has no frame of reference for someone who genuinely doesn't care, even when offered the chance for a real fight, a real challenge. Akutsu got way too into their match to have been one of those.

A difference of opinion is fine - I'm not saying I didn't enjoy this (I enjoy everything you write, because you write WELL), I just found the character too like Akutsu. *shrugs* Maybe I needed an explainer graph with Akutsu specifically explained.

I think this character just struck me as Akutsu, rewind.

*nods, thoughtfully* An explainer graph I could probably do. Akutsu would make a reasonable point of comparison from Momo's viewpoint. Any clarification I can give without descending into exposition is a good thing. And contrasting Matsueda to Akutsu, a bit, could help flesh Matsueda out some more, which I do want to do. And help emphasize the development of Momo's analytical eye, which would be good too. *claps hands* Good, that'll all work! *scribbles revision notes*

Momo is supposed to be QUITE the analyst, so that would work. *relieved she didn't offend*

I think that would flesh out Matsueda more.
