Brief Flurries: Day Two

So, I'm really not at home to most challenges, but some of the Snowflake prompts do catch my attention.

In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul.

And I recall Sailor Moon. But more than the anime itself (or the manga, or the other anime...) I recall how one of my literature students lassoed me into Fandom by using Sailor Moon. She spotted my weaknesses right off and suggested that I'd be interested by a narrative comparison of the sub versus dub endings to Season One, especially the way that excising all the violence for dub-land also managed to snip out all of Sailor Moon's agency in the scene. And, well, that was me done and dusted.

So here's to you, Kay. Well done.

Oh, that sounds like an interesting start into fandom/Sailor Moon! My first contact was the German sub (back when I had no idea such a thing as internet fandom even existed), and I watched it mainly because I wanted to know why a guy three years older than me was so fascinated by it. About 34 episodes later I was hooked. *g*

There was a lot of analytical material in how the dub script altered the story, which it did to a (now) kind of staggering extent. It was a great lure for a lit major, and five shipments of vhs tapes later I was totally down the rabbit hole!

Hee. My friends and I had a lot of fun comparing the two. Another friend saw it on tv first, got me into it and then I started getting the subs because I wasn't that thrilled with it. Liked it better as the subs.

Very well done of your student indeed!! Lol. Present it as an intellectual challenge...

And yes, your observation is very key! Probably why I wasn't so into it when it was on tv. ;p


One of the most hysterical changes I remember, though, was a time when the girls were all competing for the lead role in a school play.

Ami said she should get it because she was the smartest. Mina said she should get it because she was the prettiest. Rei... I don't remember what she said. Then Makoto... in the subtitled version, she said she should get it because she had the biggest breasts. In the dubbed version, she had the most talent. (With the screen still doing the close up on her breasts.)

From that point on, "talent" was a multi-use word in my friends group. ^^
