Okay, I'm feeling restless, so I shall give myself something to do.

Give me a character and I will tell you something about my personal canon for them, the backstory that lives in my head.

Date: 2009-08-17 04:08 pm (UTC)So let's see... Tsuna, maybe. I think Tsuna has long been hungry for, not just an identity, but a very solid and definite one. His mother is sweet, but a total fluffhead (I mean, what kind of person really does tell her son that his father has disappeared when he's only gone off to a remote job?). Tsuna is a fairly serious sort, himself. This, in my head, is why he became Dame Tsuna, despite his obvious great native abilities. He wanted a sure identity that stood out enough to anchor him and the class klutz/loser was easier than the class star.

Date: 2009-08-17 04:30 pm (UTC)As a woman in an elite special forces group in an extremely macho culture, Lal has always had to be hard, to stay sharp, to be better than anyone else. She agreed to become arcobaleno because it was a natural extension of the way she'd been living her life: sacrifice and excellence. She's extremely conflicted over Colonello's interference. Part of her is touched that he would take a bullet for her. Part of her is pissed off that her student hadn't learned how to execute his plans better, and screwed up. A big part of her is outraged that he would try to take this excellence away from her, even as another part knows it's the sacrifice and curse he was thinking about. She's never told him that it almost broke her to be weakened in the way his interference caused, and she doesn't think he's ever realized. That is why, despite loving him back in her own way, she will never enter a relationship with him.
She respects Reborn's insight, and has since they met, though she swears she'll pound him into paste the next time he uses it on her personal life, really she will this time. He was the one who suggested CEDEF to her, after the ritual misfired, and she admits, only to herself, that, yes, she needed an organized group to be a part of now that she couldn't go back to COMSUBIN. It probably saved her life. She recognizes her debt to Reborn because of that, though neither of them has ever spoken of it or ever will.

Cordelia Chase (cf Buffy)
(wow, how much good could the former have done for the latter!)

Date: 2009-08-18 03:48 am (UTC)My personal canon for Cordy is kind of bound up in my general conviction that the premises of Angel and The Powers That Be in particular is nonsensical. So, according to my personal canon, Cordelia was tricked by beings that are not, in fact, benevolent, and is, in fact, spiritually incarcerated. And she's trying to pick the lock, because she's just that kind of stubborn, and is muttering under her non-celestial breath the whole time about how she should have known better and next time she will keep a proper grip on her cynicism and snark and look twice outside the box. And at some point she and Spike are going to or maybe already have had a meeting as not-exactly-heavenly beings and strike up a deal to help each other get out of dodge. This may well result in a life-long friendship or soul-mate-ship of snark which will make the world and afterworld, and especially Angel, quail.

*love you*

Date: 2009-08-18 05:07 pm (UTC)On the other hand, I am convinced that by the time Konomi came to write Yukimura's actual tennis style he'd flat run out of ideas; I don't buy the 'yips' idiocy at all. So my current personal canon for him is that his effect on opponents is purely a result of kenki--of his swordsman's spirit being stronger than theirs. (This is so totally a samurai story, not a sports story; this is also my personal canon for the whole of tenipuri.) This matches the actual presentation a lot better than the lame explanations about yips, which doesn't fit at all.
