Our house was just broken into. While I was here.
I heard the doorbell ring, and figured it was a delivery and I'd get a few more winks before getting up to see. And then there was some noise from downstairs and I wondered if the cat was getting rowdy. And then I thought I heard some steps (old wood floor you know, it creaks) and turned over, wondering, so I saw a hand open the bedroom door. Quite abruptly. So I said "what?!" like any sensible person. And the hand vanished, and the steps booked it downstairs, and by the time I got my bathrobe on and my walking stick in hand, the burglar was gone.
With my ipod nano and the dock. But nothing else.
And I know how he got in. The cat door was opened, and I checked, it's possible to reach from there to the lock on the back door, which was open. If I take the key out of the deadbolt, that will fix the problem, which makes me feel better.
But I'm still kind of freaking out bigtime here.

Fucking hell, I'm just thankful it was an asshole and not a pervert.

Date: 2009-08-09 12:57 pm (UTC)I'm still thinking about what to do with that information. To be honest, my kneejerk reaction is to ask for deletion of my comments. Though I'd like to check whether it would be possible to change the username in ways that turn it into my DW account, but I'm not sure that is even possible. And as I didn't create the OpenID myself, I don't think I could gain access to it.
Until I know what to do, could you do me a favor and unfriend my OpenID? (The profile page shows up in search engines as well.)

Date: 2009-08-09 03:41 pm (UTC)And of course you can access your OpenID account! It's yours; you're the only one who can control it. Just log out of dw, and go to the home page. Under the regular log-in boxes, click on the "log in with OpenID" link. Type das-dingsi.insanejournal.com into the text-box that comes up, and, when you're directed to IJ for confirmation, tell it, yes, trust DW (at least once). That means IJ is allowed to say, basically "yeah, he's from here". That will log you in to your OpenID on DW, and you will be able to do whatever you want. If you really want to delete the account, you can, though I don't recommend that; it would just mean you couldn't control your imported comments any more.
Linking accounts is one of the things that is in the pipeline, here, but it isn't here yet. So is mass management of one's own comments, but I think that's still in the design stage, too.
What would be most useful, in my opinion, is an option to turn off that "forwarding" email that's automatically supplied to paid accounts, because it's so easy to guess. Just harvesting usernames and then slapping an @whateverjournal.com on them has got to be the easiest spam approach ever. *makes a face*

Date: 2009-08-09 04:20 pm (UTC)*points to icon* I'm sorry, my mistake. For some reason, I often confuse you with another user, who in this case has my OpenID friended.
Thank you for the explanation of the login process; that helps a lot. I went at this totally from the wrong angle -- it's been months since I've had to use OpenID in any form and I instinctively went to the OpenID website, instead of logging in AT Dreamwidth WITH my OpenID, which of course accomplished zero. And then on top of that I misunderstood something they said at their homepage to mean that you cannot login into an account unless you created it yourself. So I basically did the internet equivalent to a confused chicken dance. With jazz hands.
The linking of accounts is actually what I'm hoping for; I remembered a post made a while ago where this feature was mentioned as being in the works. I'd love DW comments pointing to my DW account.
Thank you for your patience, btw. I'm sure I'm not the only one asking you stupid questions or jumping to false assumptions about internetz stuff, so I appreciate your friendly and helpful reaction.
