Touch and Slam Dunk immediately spring to mind as classics.

Whistle!, Hikaru no Go and Eyeshield 21 are all worth considering as "modern" examples. I also have a sneaking fondness for Dear Boys, but that's definitely mediocre.

Hunter x Hunter wouldn't be my choice for fight genre - if you're going with a fight genre, you'd need Dragonball Z, since I think that's the standard. If you want a Togashi piece, YYH is much more classic than H x H (and borrows a lot of the tournament-style that you might . Still, none of those strike me as true "sports" manga - although they are all shonen.

I can't think of any other "sports" manga that Obata did - as far as I'm aware, he did Ayasuri Sakon, Hikago, and Death Note (all different genres although there's a lot of similarities in the characters).

Dan Doh is another example of weird sports animes - welcome to the wonderful world of golf.

Although it's not "shonen," Yawara should be mentioned as an important piece of sports anime.

Are you worried about Obata in terms of author variety? Because he didn't write HikaGo. The author was Hotta Yumi. Obata works mainly as a primary artist. Same deal with Death Note and most of his other works.

I've just been rewatching Dear Boys. It's such a sweet show. And I love that the girls team actually plays and plays well. That's a real treat. I wish I could get hold of the manga.

I only saw the anime - I'm not much of a manga fan. It was cute, but nothing that I'd take the time to go through again. The animation was poor, and the ending was disapointing. I think a lot of anime suffers from the 12-24 episode standard.

Slam Dunk manga definitely. And of course Captain Tsubasa, though all I've got of that is three or four chapters from a group that's recently started to scanlate it. I'm sure it's got to be available somehow, though.

Touch never struck me as a sports series, though it definitely involves sports. But I've not watched beyond the first arc of the anime and I think the sports aspect really ramps up after that. And it's certainly a classic and highly influential. I would also highly recommend H2, a baseball manga by the same mangaka.

Hajime no Ippo is a boxing series which is interesting in that it's not a school series, but otherwise is classic shounen sports. I've watched the anime, which I love, but haven't delved into the manga yet because there's so much of it, I don't know how I'd ever catch up. It started ages ago -- maybe more than ten years -- and is still ongoing. I think it would definitely count as classic.

Eyeshield 21 is excellent, if strange, and has all the hallmarks of the genre. Manga over anime, definitely.

I follow some series that aren't super amazing, but are fun. Aoki Densetsu Shoot is a soccer anime that really is, at least as far as I've watched, bog standard shounen sports. All the neccessary elements, just the characters aren't that interesting.

I could pretty easily lay out the elements necessary to build a standard shounen sports series. Which, actually, is kind of what happened with the lacrosse. *g*

Slam Dunk: Both easily available and the anime is quite good (Mitsui is my fave of Okiayu's characters) though some of the games really drag on. I think if the fandom were still quite active, SD would have pulled me away from PoT.

H2: Manga is being scanlated. (The series is complete.) There was an anime but I haven't been able to track it down. There was also a recent live action version, which I have, but haven't watched all through, since I don't want it to spoil me for the manga. I've watched some, though.

Hajime no Ippo: Both easily available. The manga is, as I mentioned, ongoing.

ES21: Both easily available, both ongoing.

Whistle!: Anime complete and available, manga being published by VIZ, and they're not too far through yet. I've never been able to find scanlations for more than the first couple of chapters.

Touch: The anime should be easily available. I haven't seen the manga anywhere.

Oh, and don't forget Hice Cool! *g*

I just finished copying "Touch" down to disc, or if you want, you can pull it down off of Bit: http://a.scarywater.net/ca/ Central Anime did all 101 episodes plus the two important movies. (The first three were just recaps of the series). The really amusing thing of it was.... even though it's vintaged '85, most of my students all knew what it was. Although I don't think it's as popular as Slam Dunk (which *still* has paraphenilia being sold), it is extremely well-known and well-liked.
