PoT: Third Watch: Third Watch

Fic post from my archive.
When the third years retire from the club, Kirihara has to deal with taking over.
It was an obvious truth that few, if any, of them could become what Yukimura or Sanada or Yanagi was. Akaya nodded, and raised his voice. "It doesn't matter. What we are is Rikkai. We will win."

Date: 2004-10-16 02:52 am (UTC)Ueda-->Ueda Yuuji? Of Sanosuke fame?
Furuya-->Furuya Toru-->Chiba Mamoru (Someone else settled this one, yes?)
Hiiyama-->Hiiyama Nobuyuki-->Hiei? And also Jackal?
Suzuoki-->Suzuoki Hirotaka-->Hellooooooooo, Saitoh-sama! ^___^
Tsunoda I'm drawing a whole lotta nothing on--is he a character, or a writer rather than a seiyuu? Kuwabara is another YYH reference, of course.
[goes to work on Sakamoto]
Oh! BSSM! All becomes clear. [grin] Tricky wench.
With that out of the way...
"Someone mentioned that you've been staying late," Niou-senpai provided, recapturing him by the ends of his scarf and reeling him in.
Now, I wonder just who could have noticed that Kirihara's been working too hard? [grins]
Also, the visual of Niou using Kirihara's scarf to reel him in is just too lovely. 156 got to you too, didn't it?
Hee!
So much of the lovely, so little space to gush in! My cousins and aunt and mother are looking at me funny now. Squee!

Date: 2004-10-16 03:29 am (UTC)I like it that he seems to have a lot more self-knowledge than he ever showed before. And he has a better understanding of his old team's dynamics. Who would have thunk it? Tennis is good for you!

Date: 2004-10-16 12:04 pm (UTC)Ooh, and all these new characters to grow fond of! I am definitely enjoying this new advisor. Don't know why, but I keep picturing Treize.... hn.
Oh, and must love on the sen-nen sei stopping by to check in on the team. Or, more specifically, Kirihara. And Yukimura. <3<3<3<3 how did he put it? "Impressive," Suzuoki commented, quietly. "I don't think anyone has ever delivered such a sharp threat to me without saying anything." {{Laughs delightedly}}
And, definitely--Niou and Jackal... Niou grabbing Kiri by the scarf and Jackal's retort about getting Yagyuu.... ^^___^ Actually, I wouldn't have been surprised if it was a staged abduction and the others were already waiting at the cafe ^___^
Oh, I'm so glad to see this. And knowing you have parts 2 and 3 almost ready? {squeals} The ending to this was great, so either you were worried about nothing, or the boys decided to work with you. And my only complaint is an old one: I want more! {impatient stamp of foot and wolf-pup pout}

Date: 2004-10-16 05:43 pm (UTC)The boys did decide to work with me, when I threatened to abandon them in favor of marathoning Shaman King. They're really very possessive. If I'm lucky they may even give me the ending for the Fuji v Kiri street match, tell me exactly what Yukimura says to Suzuoki, and let me write the damn season-start story. *coughs* See, it isn't exactly two and three that are hanging fire... *sighs*
But! More coming, yes. ^____^

Date: 2004-10-16 06:39 pm (UTC)I think what really gets me going about this piece is the captains he will be encountering later on - especially Kamio and Hiyoshi. For some reason, all of them have tempers like powder kegs and I think that will be fun to see.

I just have one question (because my memory is the worst). I'm a little lost in the calendar. In which month happened the Nationals? The 3rd years players retired after the Nationals but they still are in 3rd year? Or they alreay are in high school??? Kirihara is still in 2nd year or he alreay are in 3rd year??
I always try to understand this, and people are always explaning to me, but I can't manage myself to really understand. (I'm stupid, I know).
Could you enlight me, please??

The Japanese school year runs from April to May, the whole year round, basically. There are three terms, and three breaks. Summer break, the longest, usually runs from mid July to late August. Winter break is usually the last week of December. And Spring break is the last week of May. And just before Spring break the third years graduate, and right after it the new year starts.
As best I can place it, district preliminaries were in April, and Prefecturals were in May. Regionals seem to have run from June most of the way through July. It looks like Nationals will take place in August, probably during the Summer break period.
The thing is, after Summer break (which is when the tennis clubs seem to have a major training push), Winter term starts. And Winter term is when third years are supposed to stop participating in their clubs and study for High School or College entrance exams. Exams take place in February, I believe. So after Summer break, the third years "retire" from the club. This leaves the first and second years. Winter term is when these remaining members form the new team that will play in next year's tournament. Because the tournaments start pretty much as soon as the new school year starts, there's no reasonable way the incoming first years could train up fast enough for any of them to take part, which is why the first years who have managed to be good enough are so remarkable.
So, after Nationals, the third years are still third years, but they are no longer in the club. Kirihara is still a second year, but he is the captain of the newly formed team that will compete as soon as the new school year starts.
It is confusing, if you're not used to a year round system.

Date: 2004-10-17 08:19 pm (UTC)I just have one doubt. When Kawamura says in PoT that he will no longer play, he's talking about all High School years? I mean he will really stop play tennis (not just for studies like all other 3rd year Regulars?)?
