Noooo, the lesson of HAL is not "don't create technology you can't understand or control", it seems to be rather "don't instruct your AI to do something it's specifically programmed not to do".
And, additionally, "any living thing, threatened with death, will go to quite great lengths to avoid it, up to and including killing the individuals that threaten it".
DUH.
I mean, for pity's sake.
I am also, quite frankly, dubious of 2001's entitlement to the genre "science fiction". It sure looks like straight-up mysticism to me. Indeed, /counter/ science in many ways.
