The effects of kudos

Let the record show that, when I link a fic-offering from LJ to my DW, I get no feedback at all. When I link a similar fic-offering from LJ to AO3, I get 3 kudos out of 21 hits. That's a bit over average response rates, normally I get around 1 in 10.

So, my take on a Ticky/Kudo/I-Read-This button on DW posts? Go for it!

Sing it. I am basically all for anything that makes it easier or more likely for people to make their presence known, however they choose to do so.

It's only innate laziness that keeps me from sticking a poll at the end of fic entries to imitate the kudos option.

I keep the raw code for the kudos poll in the text-of-your-choice module on my writing journal's layout, for easy access.

Hmm, now there's a thought, since I already edit entries with the reply link for LJ...

As a warning, adding a poll to an already-posted entry is a lot trickier--you may have to use the poll creator, and DW treats it like a brand-new post, so if it's set to crosspost, it will make a new crosspost to the top of your LJ.

Hmmm. Sounds like what I would need is to just drop it into the original entry, then, and stick my reply@LJ link in afterwards instead.

Nooooo, I don't use the automatic crosspost links. I actually don't want my content crossposted to LJ, but my fic journal has a complicated enough set of tags that I don't want to set up the pointer-posts by hand. Hence the crosspost-then-edit song and dance. (I've actually got it down to a science at this point.)

...on the other hand, if there's a way to set up the crosspost footer on DW that links it directly to the ?mode=reply URL and isn't the naked URL, then I am all ears.

So, if I get this right, you want a post on LJ to appear saying "there's something over on DW", but not the actual something? I don't know what the reply links are for, though.

Sorry, if this isn't something you want troubleshooted I'll back off. You seem to have a system that works for you.

*wry* Oh, no worries, god knows I'm probably making this more complicated than I need to. (Perhaps a visual aid would be useful: lysapadin; lysapadin.)

Basically I treat the LJ account like a feed, with the entries giving header information and then a link to the actual entry on DW. And, because I'll take fic feedback any way I can get it (and LJ-only people are remarkably resistant to OpenID), I edit the DW entry to include a link back to the LJ mirror with the quick-reply box open (the ?mode=reply appended to the URL) plus the OpenID FAQ.

Looking at the settings for the crosspost footer, it looks like there's not a way to format the DW site footer to look tidy, so I'm guessing that my crosspost-edit-edit dance is probably what I'm looking for, for the time being.

*thoughtful* So, what you need is a job that runs once a day, checks your fic DW for new-since-last-check posts, extracts everything before the cut tag and, in place of the cut, makes a link to the DW-reply post.

...that *might* actually be possible, and host it on alltrees.

*considers* Given that I don't update either of them, I think it may be best to let them expire gracefully. Between DW and AO3, I reckon I'm covered for the time being.

Reading on DW! Also, to be fair, reading on LJ as well, so it really just comes down to which one I open first (though I try to remember to go to DW entries for commenting, I don't always recall which one I'm on at a given time, and thus my comments are often somewhat scattershot).

*grins* Yeah, I figure if there's a kudos button on DW, people will be less fussed about "am I commenting on the right one" too.

I stick in polls on my LJ stories for comments - started doing that before the kudos button on AO3, even. They *dramatically* increase the number of responses. People just don't like to comment, but a kudo-button is something easy and that they like to do. My most recent story? 5 comments, 23 poll responses. (And, okay, AO3 is a bit less - 3 kudos for 143 hits, but still...) I'd say go for it on DW too, and well appreciated!

Yeah, I did a ticky-comment up on my archive, and it definitely increases feedback. I don't know why some people are flailing around about how this isn't 'real' feedback and people /should/ be leaving 'real' comments. Fact is, they're not going to, and a kudo or ticky means some of them might leave /that/. I fail to see a downside.

Exactly. The people who comment still comment. The people who used to comment did not suddenly *stop* commenting in place of kudos... instead people who never comment are instead clicking on ticky boxes. And I can verify all that from my records. People are silly if they think otherwise. I think some people are over-concerned about "real" comments.
