Amazing how "speech" is taught but not "listening," and how little attention is given to listening in lots of ideas and talk about communication, but you're perfectly right.

Ah, Bakhtin, my first crit crush. Though this particular ramble is more the love-child of Lois McMaster Bujold and Ursula K. LeGuin. I've become so fond of their takes on what audience is all about that I get bewildered when the activeness of receiving anything is overlooked or dismissed.
... not that Speech class didn't involve long periods of utter passive boredom, but that was all about not listening. *wry*
