Hanging around my guy friends who like anime, yaoi did come up in conversation a few times. And then recently, they found out I am a rabid yaoi fangirl. Once the awkwardness faded, their first response to the description of yaoi was, "So, it's gay porn?"
I didn't quite twitch, but told them heavens forbid if people actually believed yaoi = gay porn.
One of them then professed he likes yuri, and proceeded to regale me with the psychology behind the Utena pairings. *sweatdrop* His eloquent conclusion was that yaoi was homoerotica catered to women in the same way some lesbian porno caters to men.
Needless to say, I found myself wishing all Americans would take things in strides like he did. ^__~
He double majors in neurobiology and linguistics, practices aikido and kenjutsu, is a gaijin, yet has shinto priest certification. I don't really consider him one of the normal people. ^__~ He's the one who discusses technical plausibility of Ouka's death in Weiss Kreuz with me. Utena is his all-favorite subject of discussion, and he always finds a way to connect Utena to any conversation we have. It's amazing, really.
I THINK I saw it when it was first put up on the web, but I can't remember. There was something we discussed back when fanthro was a listserv. Either way, it should be interesting to propigate it.

And points for him if he made it through Utena and still had enough coherence left to wax psychological. ^_-
