As By threw back his head and laughed, a tiny voice in the back of Ivan's head reminded him that By liked challenges quite a lot. Ivan ignored it firmly. It wasn't his fault that he kept winding up in these situations.
Not My Fault
He really didn’t know how this kept happening.
"By," he said, proud of how even his voice was, "we’re not on an assignment, right?"
"Right," By agreed with a lazy smile full of predatory inquiry.
"And we’re not under any kind of surveillance, right?" They had damn well better not be, or he’d… well, he’d think of something.
By made an affirmative sound to this, too, leaning closer.
"So why exactly," Ivan persevered, "am I sitting on your couch with my pants undone?" The sternness of the question was a bit undercut by his gasp as By’s fingers stroked down his length.
"Because it’s fun," By declared with a downright wicked smile. Before Ivan could ask who for, By leaned in all the way and nibbled on his neck and Ivan couldn’t quite stifle the moan as a shiver of heat ran down his spine to jolt between his legs. "See?" By had the evilness to say.
"Dammit, By…" Ivan took a breath, hand clenching in By’s tunic, and it would be nice if he could convince himself that was a prelude to throwing the other man off the couch. "I like women," he managed, a bit plaintively.
"Of course you do." By fingered his cock, smiling agreeably all the while. "But tastes do change as we mature. I mean," he waved his free hand airily, "just look at Lady Alys."
Ivan’s brain short circuited as he attempted frantically not to imagine his mother in relation to any kind of sex whatsoever, a job made harder these days by Illyan, and just thinking that made his eyes cross all over again. By took ungentlemanly advantage of this to straddle Ivan’s lap and wrap a hand firmly around him. And Ivan was a guy, after all, was it his fault if that made his hips rock up and grind against By’s? No, it was not. Not at all.
He would think of a justification later, for his hands to be spread against By’s back, pulling By tight against him, and for the sound he made into By’s mouth.
He would have a harder time explaining the way his hands slid down to cup By’s ass and knead it while By was getting both their clothing out of the way and stroking their cocks together. If he bothered explaining. Maybe he wouldn’t. It felt good, hot and slick, and By was laughing low in his throat, wicked and knowing, the way none of the girls Ivan had ever been with had, well, barring Lady Donna, so maybe it was just a Vorrutyer thing. And, anyway, look how that had ended up…
The rush of pleasure unraveled Ivan’s thoughts.
When he could put words together sensibly again By was handing him a towel and a smirk. Ivan growled at the latter and took the former, cleaning himself up with as much dignity as possible.
By didn’t even bother fastening his pants, and still managed to look collected, which Ivan thought was cosmically unfair. "One of these days I’ll get you to stay the night."
Ivan gave him a dire look. "Don’t even think it."
As By threw back his head and laughed, a tiny voice in the back of Ivan’s head reminded him that By liked challenges quite a lot. Ivan ignored it firmly. It wasn’t his fault that he kept winding up in these situations.
He really didn’t know how it happened.

Your take in Challenge of the 'Playtime is over' segment was brilliant - I loved the thought you put into it, and how you wrote it from Niou's viewpoint in a way that just fit the manga to
The dynamics of D1 are, of course, fascinating. It pleases me to speculate that tennis is what brings out the pair's real personalities: Niou is aggressive and casual in real life, but quiet and calculating on the court; whereas Yagyuu is the vicious one. (early on I found the scene following the Kanto semifinals wonderfully suggestive, where Yagyuu punches Kirihara's fist in congratulation after defeating Tachibana; it always seemed like an implicit approval, even acceptance, of his tactics.)
I love how you suggest the backchat to Sanada and the Kikumaru violence was Yagyuu showing through, rather than Yagyuu-as-Niou. Niou, I think, is by far the more stable of the two: Yagyuu would probably be the easier to live with, as he doesn't hurt you unless you push his buttons, but assuming you'd managed to piss both of them off, I have an idea Niou would be the more reasonable one.
So Niou, definitely the game-maker of the two; probably less likely than Yagyuu to get carried away by the thrill of the game; mathematician, analyst (he seems to hold this grudging admiration of Yanagi, like he half-resents, half-delights in the fact that someone can outthink him)
According to 20.5, Yagyuu is a net player, serve-and-volley player; essentially an offensive, aggressive play style. More notably, though the 'brains' of the pair in POT in general is the one who plays at the baseline! (then again, serve-and-volley players in PoT tend to be fairly bouncy sort of people) : Eiji, Marui, Gakuto, Jirou - Yagyuu and Ootori being exceptions. In the manga was that 'Niou' was originally at the net, but Niou took over after the switch, which made me go !!! because it didn't really tally with 20.5, but I think you're right to place them along a continuum. Unlike the other well-established doubles pairs (ToriShishi, OshiGaku, Golden Pair, Jackal and Marui), Yagyuu and Niou seem to have fairly complete games. Either would be pretty comfortable on a singles court.

*sparkly eyes* Oooo, I missed that! That is Yagyuu all over, isn't it? The under-Yagyuu.
*tips head* I've come to a rather odd view of Niou--that he's perfectly reasonable and logical, just not in the same way most of the rest of the world is. That what restrains him is less any common sense of morals than personal loyalties. I think he's a little crazy, but a stable sort of crazy. Yagyuu, on the other hand, as you say, strikes me as a lot more dangerous once he's actually set off.
n the manga was that 'Niou' was originally at the net, but Niou took over after the switch, which made me go !!! because it didn't really tally with 20.5
Well, Niou is an all-round player, so it didn't strike me as strange for him. I do wonder about Yagyuu holding the baseline, then, but Laser seems like the sort of shot that would work really well as a deep volley, something fired from the baseline. They do seem remarkably flexible, as a pair, don't they?

When 'Yagyuu' said it is time to get serious and stop playing, I get the distinct feeling that it is a code phrase, one used to bring 'Niou'/Niou (is this making sense?) out their madness. Because 'Niou' seem to lack a control that Niou instincltively have. So, Yagyuu the gentleman have some major control issues, while Niou thrives on chaos, but is more like the eye of the storm.
Of course, all of this depends on the manga. *sighs*
In addition, while I think the switch is relative new, I do think it has been in the planning stage, or at least is something the two of them have been joking about for a very long time. Which raises the interesting question of just how long has the two them being switching. Were they already each other when they first encountered Ryouma?
As for Yagyuu/Niou with Niou as psychological top
