I admit, I was both entertained and mildly annoyed by Manga-Kentarou. His personal means of upping the pressure (girls) were... different. Dude, and he's only supposed to be 12 or so, too.
Yeah... The anime, if I'm recalling this correctly, didn't have any sort of romantic/girl-interest overtones. The Kentarou-Ryouma match was purely about the joy of playing/competing/winning (more on Ryouma's part, I think, than Kentarou's). What I've read of the manga so far doesn't reflect that... which grieves me.
Do you notice that, while the kids look like athletic young men half again their alleged ages, the adults tend to look comedic and gorilla-like? Or else totally distant and sketchy. The contrast is fascinating. It lets the boy-readers identify with the maturity of the their-age characters while still making that maturity distinct from that of the laughable adults.
Now that you've pointed it out... [grin]
Mostly I was just thrilled with smoking!Nanjirou. I'm a sucker for 2-D men (and the occasional woman, although Faye Valentine is the only one I can think of off-hand) with cigarettes.
