Promise

Knowing the history of Byakuya's promises, Rukia makes one of her own, and hopes Renji can accept it. Drama with Angst, I-4.

A subtle softening passed over her brother's face. Nothing so overt as a smile, but Rukia brightened to see it. I'll make our house proud, she assured him silently. I will. I promise.

*grins* Persistent little devil, isn't he? He's even more close-mouthed than his seiyuu-sib, Tezuka, though; real pain to write from his pov.

This is fascinating, because you manage to touch on several things in their relationship without coming out and saying it, the fact you manage to drag in people that is not even in present is wonderful. I have always thought of Renji and Rukia as what could have been. Not that they aren't good friends (bestest of friends,) but of the fact that they could have been so much more, but it is too late for them now. They have changed too much to be what they could have been, and that hurt because I think the both of them know it too.

Thank you, indeed. I'm seeing what I can do to match KT's narrative style, and this speaking about things by implication and absence is what I settled on.

*wry* I have to admit, though, a lot of the point of writing this arc is to get Rukia and Renji and Byakyua to work through their various Issues until Rukia and Renji can be together. I'm fairly die-hard about the Rukia-Renji romance, and couldn't stand the owowow any longer.

Of course playing with the politics is awfully fun, too. *grins*
