Sports = sex
I, and others, have said this before, but it bears repeating.
Sports, in shounen, equals sex.
This becomes very clear when you try to write actual matches of any kind. It is just like writing a sex scene, complete with the need to balance technical description with emotive/experiential description.
Most of the vocabulary is even the same.
And if you're not in a good mental space to write a sex scene, a match scene isn't going to come easily either.
*sighs*

Mecha seem more like natural (or at least prosthetic) extensions of the body than other intermediary-based combat a la Pokemon; special exception for Alphonse Elric.

But very few shounen stories seem to involve any kind or /real/ distance weapons. It's either close-up weapons or else something like mecha where you /do/ have a sort of extension or mirror of the human body going on.
And even in duels by proxy, like Shaman King, or Poke-Digi, there's a whole lot of focus given to the emotional engagement and intensity of relationship between rivals.

I concur ♥~
What's even more bizarre is that I started thinking about Eyeshield 21 when I read your entry. . .only to see Hiruma Youichi as your layout when I made a comment.
Life sure is weird (:D)~
