branchandroot: oak against sky (Default)
I’ve been catching up with the Meitantei Conan episodes I’ve missed, lately, the anime being my primary outlet for Conan these days, and my goodness. Just hit the flashback meeting with Akai, and /good lord/.

Ran, sweetie, I love you and your ass-kicking all the livelong day, and so I’m going to tell you right now to get over Shinichi and hook up with Sera instead. Leave Shinichi to his third-grade hell, babe, he’s not worth you, and also the Akai/Shinichi has clearly been going on since the /first/ time the kid was in third grade. If you really, really feel the need to crush on insane detective types who run off at the first sound of screams, for pity’s sake pick one that doesn’t come with competition already attached. Sera FTW, babe, I’m telling you. You can spar together, it’ll be great.

This series would actually be doing a reasonably good job with the romance if a) it hadn’t gone on for so damn long with the boys refusing to tell the girls a single goddamn thing and b) if Shinichi were not so /constantly/ shown to be sharing actual mind-meld moments with Akai every time they’re within stone’s throw of each other (and often when they’re not).

I mean, seriously. The various detectives have five times the chemistry with /any/ of each other that they do with their various official love interests, and I don’t know why Ran and Kazuha haven’t started some kind of “recovering from fucking detectives” support group dedicated to finding partners who actually deserve them.

I do note that the two adult women who we know are married to detective types (Yukiko and Mary) are both stunningly strong personalities who have used that to keep themselves from being overwhelmed, and I like that. I really do! It’s the in-progress detective courting that makes me headdesk, because how are they supposed to develop meaningful romances when the people who (very literally) understand them deepest and most intimately are all the other detectives, instead?

Also, the artificiality of both Shinichi’s and Heiji’s stalled romances annoys me. Slow-build is one thing, but /repeated/ instances of “sudden wind/interruption/shrinkage, whoops didn’t hear you say you loved me” are just not supportable.
