Apropos of a delightful piece on Star Wars:

Joseph Campbell is an anthropological hack, and was even by the standards of his own day. With one hand, he claims that certain psycho-social patterns are universal, while, with the other, he carefully weeds out of his source material any myths that do not support his claim. He is blindly enamored of Freud and utterly fails to objectively or critically consider whether Freud's theories apply to his own home culture, far less everyone else's.

Joseph Campbell should not, under any circumstances, be considered an arbiter of universal Truths, and especially not for the poor reason that the person reading him lives in the same culture box and recognizes Campbell's symbolic accent. The comfort of hearing oneself declared universal is no excuse for failing to remember that the declaration is wrong.
