Inspired by a (totally statistically invalid) survey which will likely get booted off the comm where I saw it in fairly short order.
A capsule explanation of why I like anime:
Major reason no. 1--it's animated, and that gives me a little distance from whatever issues, personal or social, are being dealt with. That distance makes it far easier for me to watch and think about than any live-action. The fact that Japanese voice actors consistently deliver far more sophisticated performances than US voice actors leads me to prefer Japanese animation to US animation.
Major reason no. 2--the characters are more likely than not to be complex. Good guys aren't perfect, not even the pure ones, and bad guys often have valid reasons and motives for their actions, even the horrible ones.
Eye and ear candy are nice, too, but they are minor, rather than major, considerations.
I have seen no. 2 cited, not infrequently, by other people as their own reason. No. 1 seems considerably more rare... or at least more rarely articulated.
