So really, I think the marketing-side lesson to be learned from Zhu Yilong and the new year's concert is that you can make him up all sexy and smoldering and it works for a while but eventually you have to face the fact that it's going to run straight into his default public persona, which is to smile adorably, and I'm sorry but the smile is gonna win over the makeup. I'm sorry, hard-working makeup artist, but thems the breaks when it's a public appearance.

He can do it when it's an actual role, no prob, but his general-use public persona is /really consistently/ "smile adorably".

Re: your observation. You know, it's interesting how he's so good at the gamut of roles from ultra-stoic to ultra-cutesy when he's acting, but "disarming sweetness" is the default public persona that he never seems to budge from. I wonder if that's his actual personality or what he's picked to act out for the fans...

I do kind of wonder if it's a defense of his actual personality, which seems fairly reserved. You have to figure, the "disarming" part would be very useful to anyone who valued his personal/emotional privacy.
