This is one reason why I eventually changed my major from Japanese lit to East Asian studies and started looking at history grad schools: the Japanese literary establishment is even worse than the English literary one. I mean, English-speaking Japanese lit scholars usually pick something slightly less obscure, but you still have to read a lot of that sort of thing.
