China's work is so imaginative that occasionally I have to put the book down and really think about the world he is describing because the auto-filler that kicks in for fantasy/sci-fi doesn't work. He really has gone of and created something different at least with Perditto Street Station Or perhaps I am simply not well educated enough to recognize what he's riffing off of.
