Wednesday Reads the Side Catalogue

My recent reading features two short works by Tamsyn Muir, author of the Locked Tomb series.

I liked both of these books a lot: they seemed to me to feature Muir's strengths without some of the excesses of the Tomb books.

(I am aware that these excesses are precisely the source of delight for fans. I appreciate the meticulous artistry of the series; it's just that the particular qualities of deferral, substitution, and abrasion that are the formal and tonal preoccupation of these books, and that Muir wields so expertly and so persistently, are just not quite my tempo.)

The first book was Muir's 2022 novella, Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower.

This is a revisionist princess-in-the-tower story, so the pleasure comes not from a surprise twist but from seeing how the genre is executed. Very well, I thought.

(That said, there were two or three times I did exclaim out loud, "oh no!" etc. So it's not twistless.)

I liked it enough that when it was done I felt wistful about not being with the characters any more.

(Not in a sentimental way. Or yes, in a sentimental way, but not in a cute way. Or yes cute, but not cozy. Difficult and heartbroken and ridiculous. That way.)

The second was a long short story, or maybe novelette? called Undercover, blurbed thus (in part): "A fresh-faced newcomer arrives in an isolated, gang-run town and soon finds herself taking a job nobody else wants: bodyguard to a ghoul. Not just your average mindless, half-rotted shuffler, though. Lucille is a dancer who can still put on her own lipstick and whose shows are half burlesque, half gladiator match."

What's more, I think it is better that that sounds.

[personal profile] sabotabby, I felt like you might enjoy both of these. Like you might start out thinking "Why did Frac think I would like this?" but then fairly rapidly think "OH" instead.

Anyway, that appears to be most of Muir's non-tomb catalogue, which is too bad. I wish there were more.

Games, Anime, Et cetera

I've been playing so many video games recently. After finishing the Kingdom Hearts series (thank you library, for stocking a very comprehensive collection), I decided to branch out a bit in the Square Enix catalogue and try some well-reviewed games that were on sale: Star Ocean First Departure R, Star Ocean The Second Story R, and Neo: The World Ends With You. The first TWEWY wasn't on sale too, but I remembered liking it well enough back in the day, so I went and bought it for full price... I like it way more now, so no regrets, haha.

During the weekly anime nights with A, we've also watched all of Mushishi and FLCL, two very different flavours of shows, haha. Mushishi is lovely and very chill. FLCL is basically the completely opposite vibe, while still being a feast for the eyes. Now we're well into season 1 of Haikyu, and I'm surprised just how funny it is! It's also very bingeable; I feel like I'm always surprised once we get to the six-episode mark and call it a night. I like all the characters pretty well so far, though I did get very distracted when Tsukishima was introduced because OMG, I sure have been listening to a lot of Koki Uchiyama's voice, recently xD.

I always have aspirations of writing review posts about the stuff I consume but gotta accept that I'll probably never get around to it, so, impressions will be under a cut.

Clarification about the actors in Glass Heart

The other day, my phrasing when I tried to describe what the Glass Heart actors are doing was not at all as clear as it should've been!

So: It's not that the main cast in this show are faking playing the instruments. It's that none of them are musicians at all, and they learned to play the specific material for the show well enough to visually pass not only as being able to play but as being very good (the male lead is explicitly a musical genius), with full shots of them doing bits of it rather than having body doubles or clever cuts or anything, AND doing some pretty heavy-lifting acting at the same time. (What I don't know is whether their performances pass as looking professional to actual professional musicians, but one of the supporting cast is an actual singer and seems pretty impressed with it.)

The making-of feature I linked in my last post is specifically about that aspect of the show/their performances.

Spy X Family: Code White

Been watching the Anime movie Spy X Family: Code White and its quite fun. I really wish that I could watch new episodes of it. Characters are highly entertaining. Well, most. There's this character called Agent Nightfall who like Becky Blackbell, has an unhealthy crush on Loyd Forger. However she's a bit more annoying about it than little Becky bothered to be. Still, there's plenty of laughs and action with a dash of feel good moments and I can't quit it.

I just hope next time Anya sees a suspicious piece of candy in a box she refrains from eating it.

Mississippi legal challenge: beginning 1 September, we will need to geoblock Mississippi IPs

I'll start with the tl;dr summary to make sure everyone sees it and then explain further: As of September 1, we will temporarily be forced to block access to Dreamwidth from all IP addresses that geolocate to Mississippi for legal reasons. This block will need to continue until we either win the legal case entirely, or the district court issues another injunction preventing Mississippi from enforcing their social media age verification and parental consent law against us.

Mississippi residents, we are so, so sorry. We really don't want to do this, but the legal fight we and Netchoice have been fighting for you had a temporary setback last week. We genuinely and honestly believe that we're going to win it in the end, but the Fifth Circuit appellate court said that the district judge was wrong to issue the preliminary injunction back in June that would have maintained the status quo and prevented the state from enforcing the law requiring any social media website (which is very broadly defined, and which we definitely qualify as) to deanonymize and age-verify all users and obtain parental permission from the parent of anyone under 18 who wants to open an account.

Netchoice took that appellate ruling up to the Supreme Court, who declined to overrule the Fifth Circuit with no explanation -- except for Justice Kavanaugh agreeing that we are likely to win the fight in the end, but saying that it's no big deal to let the state enforce the law in the meantime.

Needless to say, it's a big deal to let the state enforce the law in the meantime. The Mississippi law is a breathtaking state overreach: it forces us to verify the identity and age of every person who accesses Dreamwidth from the state of Mississippi and determine who's under the age of 18 by collecting identity documents, to save that highly personal and sensitive information, and then to obtain a permission slip from those users' parents to allow them to finish creating an account. It also forces us to change our moderation policies and stop anyone under 18 from accessing a wide variety of legal and beneficial speech because the state of Mississippi doesn't like it -- which, given the way Dreamwidth works, would mean blocking people from talking about those things at all. (And if you think you know exactly what kind of content the state of Mississippi doesn't like, you're absolutely right.)

Needless to say, we don't want to do that, either. Even if we wanted to, though, we can't: the resources it would take for us to build the systems that would let us do it are well beyond our capacity. You can read the sworn declaration I provided to the court for some examples of how unworkable these requirements are in practice. (That isn't even everything! The lawyers gave me a page limit!)

Unfortunately, the penalties for failing to comply with the Mississippi law are incredibly steep: fines of $10,000 per user from Mississippi who we don't have identity documents verifying age for, per incident -- which means every time someone from Mississippi loaded Dreamwidth, we'd potentially owe Mississippi $10,000. Even a single $10,000 fine would be rough for us, but the per-user, per-incident nature of the actual fine structure is an existential threat. And because we're part of the organization suing Mississippi over it, and were explicitly named in the now-overturned preliminary injunction, we think the risk of the state deciding to engage in retaliatory prosecution while the full legal challenge continues to work its way through the courts is a lot higher than we're comfortable with. Mississippi has been itching to issue those fines for a while, and while normally we wouldn't worry much because we're a small and obscure site, the fact that we've been yelling at them in court about the law being unconstitutional means the chance of them lumping us in with the big social media giants and trying to fine us is just too high for us to want to risk it. (The excellent lawyers we've been working with are Netchoice's lawyers, not ours!)

All of this means we've made the extremely painful decision that our only possible option for the time being is to block Mississippi IP addresses from accessing Dreamwidth, until we win the case. (And I repeat: I am absolutely incredibly confident we'll win the case. And apparently Justice Kavanaugh agrees!) I repeat: I am so, so sorry. This is the last thing we wanted to do, and I've been fighting my ass off for the last three years to prevent it. But, as everyone who follows the legal system knows, the Fifth Circuit is gonna do what it's gonna do, whether or not what they want to do has any relationship to the actual law.

We don't collect geolocation information ourselves, and we have no idea which of our users are residents of Mississippi. (We also don't want to know that, unless you choose to tell us.) Because of that, and because access to highly accurate geolocation databases is extremely expensive, our only option is to use our network provider's geolocation-based blocking to prevent connections from IP addresses they identify as being from Mississippi from even reaching Dreamwidth in the first place. I have no idea how accurate their geolocation is, and it's possible that some people not in Mississippi might also be affected by this block. (The inaccuracy of geolocation is only, like, the 27th most important reason on the list of "why this law is practically impossible for any site to comply with, much less a tiny site like us".)

If your IP address is identified as coming from Mississippi, beginning on September 1, you'll see a shorter, simpler version of this message and be unable to proceed to the site itself. If you would otherwise be affected, but you have a VPN or proxy service that masks your IP address and changes where your connection appears to come from, you won't get the block message, and you can keep using Dreamwidth the way you usually would.

On a completely unrelated note while I have you all here, have I mentioned lately that I really like ProtonVPN's service, privacy practices, and pricing? They also have a free tier available that, although limited to one device, has no ads or data caps and doesn't log your activity, unlike most of the free VPN services out there. VPNs are an excellent privacy and security tool that every user of the internet should be familiar with! We aren't affiliated with Proton and we don't get any kickbacks if you sign up with them, but I'm a satisfied customer and I wanted to take this chance to let you know that.

Again, we're so incredibly sorry to have to make this announcement, and I personally promise you that I will continue to fight this law, and all of the others like it that various states are passing, with every inch of the New Jersey-bred stubborn fightiness you've come to know and love over the last 16 years. The instant we think it's less legally risky for us to allow connections from Mississippi IP addresses, we'll undo the block and let you know.

Hello, friends!

Requisite "omg how has it been so long since I updated, blah, blah" shenanigans, time is weird and I don't understand how it goes so quickly.

I've drawn several things recently but I'm gonna share thing th

I took a silly little personality quiz that ended up being extremely accurate! I love personality quizzes and I used to do them all the time. It helps that the design is super cute. <3

I've been on the hunt for a new MMO as my interest in FFXIV wanes (it never really recovered after the shenanigans with the grifter) and have fallen firmly into Elder Scrolls Online. I love the Khajiit so much! I started the game as a dude but since I don't really have a group to play with (Will is playing but they're on PS4 and I'm on PC and there's no crossplay - YET) and I prefer playing as a girl. So I created a second character - also a Khajiit. Whoops!

and also, Razum-Dar is adorable and I love him.

I also started replaying Pokemon Violet, since I didn't get very far along in it. I tried to make my character look like an office worker, lmao. I don't know how old these characters are meant to be but I don't think it's fourteen, right? Like. Maybe.

Also: garden producing a lot! This is just one bowl of five that has been harvested. <3 I'm really pleased with how it's been going! I also have at least four spaghetti squash and six mini-pumpkins! And another six pocket melons! And lemon cucumbers!

I'm definitely going to be expanded the gardens for next year; with the way grocery prices are going it's better, I think, to take advantage of the space we have for vegetables.

Let's see...I'm sure there are more things, but that's all I can think of! I have art to post but some of it is NSFW and should have its own post. :3

oh you need fluff, fluff, fluff // to make a fluffernutter

The algorithm sent me this ATK recipe (paywalled, but linked for posterity, and pretty easy to extrapolate the basic idea) for a peanut butter chocolate quesadilla yesterday, and my instant reaction as a Massachusetts expat: "But where's the Marshmallow Fluff?! How can it be a Fluffernutter quesadilla without the Fluff? This is all Jarrett Barrios' fault, isn't it!"

Though of course, out here on the West Coast, getting ahold of actual Fluff is more difficult; when supermarkets have jarred marshmallow product, it's usually Kraft's Jet-Puffed Marshmallow Creme, which is more liquidy. ... hold on, I can get a two-pack of Marshmallow Fluff from my local Cost Plus?! As in the same Cost Plus where my mom used to buy us Botan candy to keep us occupied while she looked at household decor? ROFL.

Of course I ended up down the merch wormhole with my search results; I'd rather have it as a long-sleeve tee, but I love the logo on this What the Fluff sweatshirt from the Fluff Festival. 20th annual this year! Pairs well with this Ice Cream Weather hoodie from Gracie's just across the square that I've been meaning to pick up for years now. As well as my What a Cluster! tee. And now I want Goo Goo Clusters and Marshmallow Fluff. At least Moon Pies have made their way to the Bay? I can get those at my local CVS sometimes now.

Cherry on top of all this internet wormholing: while trying to figure out if Fluff was sold in any grocery stores local to me (besides Walmart, ugh), I stumbled across their recipe section, and amusingly enough, one of their most popular recipes is Lynne's Cheesecake. I swear I didn't submit it - the recipe looks like a New York cheesecake recipe, and I strongly prefer my cheesecakes burnt Basque or Japanese cotton style. But now I'm thinking, maybe I should tackle a burnt Basque Fluff cheesecake. Though admittedly, on my cheesecake back burner, I also want to make a cheesecake with Poppy Bagels' truffle schmear, Wikipedia has just informed me of the existence of a smoked salmon cheesecake, and Kat Lieu just posted a SPAM Basque cheesecake. Time to reup our Lactaid stock!

And now, of course, I'm earwormed with the old-timey Fluffernutter jingle.

(Yeah, I know, an original Fluffernutter has no chocolate, but sprinkling some chocolate chips on top of one side and melting before assembly is pretty standard. Though IME hagelslag or vlokken work better, and of course you can also get hagelslag at Cost Plus, 😂.)

Weekly proof of life: media intake and some boggling over actors

Reading and watching: [personal profile] scruloose and I have made some more progress on listening to Rogue Protocol, albeit not a huge amount; this is not helped by the fact that for some reason this book is a bit glitchy on Hoopla (every now and then a few [?] words just get skipped).

I'm lumping all of my media intake together this week because I seem to be in/have been in an "only really focusing on a show or a book" phase, so I didn't start reading anything new until I'd finished watching Glass Heart. I really liked it! No fannish feelings at this time, but it was a lot of fun.

And then I watched this behind-the-scenes video, which has left me absolutely agog over the fact that none of the TENBLANK actors knew how to play their characters' instruments at all. My brain is shattered by this information. I've never been all that close to Being A Musician (and the only way in which I came at all close was as a singer), so I'm not looking at what they're doing with a professional eye and I realize that it may look rather less convincing to people who actually do play those instruments, but.

[ETA for badly-needed clarification: It's not that the main cast in this show are faking playing the instruments. (What I don't know is whether their performances pass as looking professional to actual professional musicians, but one of the supporting cast is an actual singer and seems pretty impressed with it.)]

(I've now showed [personal profile] scruloose and Ginny and Kas the opening of episode 8, which is a flashback to two of the characters meeting after one sees the other playing. If you have Netflix and want a quick non-spoilery look at what this looks like, check that bit out. The guy in the hoodie is the male lead, played by Satoh Takeru, who also executive produced this show. Having seen him pull off playing Himura Kenshin plausibly, I should perhaps not be this dumbfounded by watching him play a musician, but here we are.)

Anyway! Since finishing that drama, I've read KJ Charles' Any Old Diamonds and Jordan L. Hawk's The Forgotten Dead and am now reading These Burning Stars (Bethany Jacobs). I also currently have a non-fiction read on the go: Warmth: Coming of Age at the End of Our World (Daniel Sherrell).

And cutting back to watching things, I've also now seen a few episodes (three?) of K-foodie meets J-foodie on Netflix, in which two passionate foodies, one from Japan and one from Korea, eat a lot of delicious things together. The bit I've seen has been entirely in Japan, but I assume some episodes (or possibly the second season?) will be in Korea.

A. B. Speaking of boiling, today was the third day over 100F. Even with air conditioning and fans and cooling towels, it's way too hot

C. I have no sense of time any more. Everything is somehow too fast and too slow.

D. My brain is perpetually convinced I'm forgetting shit. Occasionally I actually am. But I'm basically living in perpetual anxiety.

E. Also I'm training new aides, which always sucks even when they're good

F. Phoebe is still cute af. So is Loki. The two of them are the only things keeping me halfway sane. If I can remember tomorrow I'll upload pictures.

Guardian Readalong: Vol. 3, Bonus Story: Pocket Dimension

Guardian novel readalong.

Hi, and welcome to the last installment of the Guardian novel readalong!

Here is last week's post about the Shen San extra, and you can find all previous discussions in the schedule posts (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5), or via the !readalong tag.

In this week's extra, Pocket Dimension: Zhao Yunlan shows Shen Wei how to send red envelopes from his new phone, and Shen Wei sends bonuses to the SID team until he runs out of money. Everyone wants to work for the SID under Kunlun-jun, so Shen Wei has devised personalised applications. Mysteriously, more than twice as many applications have been returned as were sent out. Zhu Hong's Fourth Uncle disappears while visiting the South Sea Water Tribe, and Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei go to investigate. They get caught in a vortex full of bubble AUs, each with a connection point to the real world. Zhao Yunlan escapes from eighty-one pocket dimensions and reunites with Shen Wei, who seems traumatised. Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei take a seaside vacation. Shen Wei thinks swimming trunks are inelegant.

Excerpts:

1) Shen Wei is possibly even worse at managing money than Zhao Yunlan is )

2) Shen Wei gives away all his money as SID bonuses )

3) Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan become trapped in bubbles )

4) What are the bubbles? )

5) Zhao Yunlan enjoys some virtual reality alernate lives with his boo )

Questions:
Did you enjoy this extra? What's your favourite thing about it? Do you have questions about what's happened in the six years between the epilogue and now? On a scale of one to ten, how terrible is Zhao Yunlan's dad? When Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan portal to the South Sea, who does the portalling: Shen Wei, Zhao Yunlan, or both separately? We know Fourth Uncle is still alive, but what happened to him? Do you think the question of the duplicate applications was satisfactorily answered? How do you feel about the bubble AUs?

(As usual, these are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the readalong!)

Finally, I just want to thank everyone who's been part of this readalong, either by hosting, commenting, or reading along! It's been such a pleasure sharing this with you all for the last nearly-ten months. And super special extra thanks to [personal profile] trobadora for being an awesome co-mod! <3 <3 <3
