Yeah, I'm guessing they're the result of people not quite remembering what's anime and what's manga, and also people doing a /whole lot/ of extrapolation and then taking it as canon. The tone of the examples I've found sure suggest that, which makes me twitch because it's /such/ bad method, but that's fans for you.
