Very much so. People try to use ethnographic work to draw parallels with if the past and present material cultures are similar (as with... pueblo indians, I believe - not sure - there's really no relevant ethnographic work to be done for the area/period I work on so...), but that makes huge assumptions about cultural continuity in an area. Every interpretation we make has to be based to some extent on things in the present.
