There's certainly a big section of Western fandom that seems to have absorbed this trope with a distressing lack of critical reflection. The Romance of Tragedy and all that guff. Which can be shiny, but also gets awfully boring really fast. I mean, the very nature of Tragedy is that it /is/ fated, and there's no way to change anything. That makes for a short story, especially once you run out of characters to kill off.
