We never saw him as part of the team; the only time we get a flashback of him playing in the team setting, he was, in fact, the only one to win (against Ban-ji's first team). Come to think of it, that may be one of the things that's always contributed to my contempt for him. Within this context, that kind of play is presented as irresponsible. *plays with thought*
