*wry* I can understand the twitching, given the culture AO3 has built up and advertised. It's just that... it's like a see-saw. We can either have set-term links that reliably find work or we can have everyone's-own-style links that only find some (*rueful* or we can try to mash both together with spit and volunteers and watch the servers crash). So, yeah, if the freeforms and the aliases can be completely divorced from the navigation, that feels like the best possible balance of the two. I hope the user base at large would feel that it's a reasonable trade-off.
