Really seriously. For us the required lit class is listed as an Arts requirement (along with music appreciation) but the /guidelines/ are all about close reading and gaining the vocabulary/concepts of critical study. It's a total mess. Holdover from the "arts as moral indicator" days. Bah.

It would help if fewer profs taught their Absolute Favorite books, because that really does mix the signals badly.
