Yes, see, they're working on the assumption that they should be reading for enjoyment, and the /class/ is all about how to read for analysis. Some people can do both at once, but not many! (And those few tend to be the lit profs...) Most people have to kind of separate the two, and if they don't... well, yeah, ruined experience.

Or maybe they're just whining that an awareness of some of the issues destroyed their ability to enjoy stories that are full of racist, sexist bullshit, in which case I kind of have no sympathy.
