branchandroot: oak against sky (Default)
I think we're seeing mostly the same thing, here, actually. That facile, face-value aspect to his casual friendships is exactly the trouble I mean. Because Yujin (unlike Jingrui for most of the series) doesn't tend to stop at face value if something matters to him. So if he /is/, then I interpret that as a lack of engagement, quite likely a deliberate refusal of engagement. This is informed by how I interpret his response to his family situation, of course. What I see in Yujin's willingness to let MCS in the door even after The Birthday is Yujin's absolute investment in following /his father's/ decisions, now he has a father to speak of, again--whether that be for or against MCS (which is how I read that line, that Yujin actually expected his dad to say no to whatever the plan was and was trying to turn aside MCS's potential displeasure).

...now I'm getting more interested in what Yujin might take from a stint in military command, actually.
